As the warmth and sunshine of the summer approaches, remember that it’s important to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays that come with the sunshine! These seven tips make it easy to enjoy the sun while staying safe and sunburn-free!
1. Use Sunscreen
Ideally, you should wear sunscreen every day, even in the winter, though it is especially important in the warmer months. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF to any exposed skin and take extra caution around water, where the reflection can increase your UV exposure. If you’re going to be in the water, be sure that you’re reapplying sunscreen every hour or so.
2. Stay In The Shade
Whenever possible, stay in shady areas when you’re outside. When there is no natural shade available, like at the beach, bring an umbrella with you!
3. Wear UPF Materials
Many articles of summer clothing can be purchased with built-in UPF protection that will give you more protection than just a regular t-shirt. Specifically, rash guards will always offer more protection than any other swim cover.
4. Wear Hats
From big floppy sunhats to ballcaps, any hat with a brim will help shield your face, neck, and upper body from harmful UV rays. The wider the brim, the more protection it will offer, and you’ll also want to look for hats with a tight weave that doesn’t allow the sun to get through.
5. Wear Protective Sunglasses
With so many affordable online sunglasses retailers, it’s easier than ever to purchase affordable sunglasses that properly protect your eyes. Ideally, you’ll want polarized or sports lenses for the most protection from glare and reflection.
6. Check The Daily UV Index
Each morning, check your weather app to see what the UV index will be and plan accordingly. The UV index is rated on a scale from 1 – 11+, and it’s not uncommon for UV levels to reach 8 or higher in the summer. The higher the UV index is, the more caution you should take.

7. Avoid Tanning
Indoor tanning comes with a lot of risks, but purposeful tanning outside does as well. Plus, with so many sunless tanning options available at the drugstore, you can get that sunkissed glow without increasing your UV exposure!
